Paintlab 2023
Paintlab is an ongoing initiative dedicated to bringing the spotlight on cutting-edge research led by scientists at Imperial College London, by pairing them with artists to produce a piece of art inspired by their research and painted live during the Exhibition Road Festival. The aim is to explain the wider public what they're currently working on.
I was very fortunate to have the chance to collaborate with Dr Edward Johns, who is the director of the Robotics department at Imperial College London, who shared the topics he was currently working on with his team, and which involved teaching robots to perform certain operations by using Dall-E. At the core of my research was the fact that the AI is queried in real time to provide the robot with a visual depiction of the object to be identified by the the robot and moved to a specific location, and that the algorithm is gradually refining the resolution of the image.
The piece was completed in 15 hours, was about 2.5m square, and Dr Johns visited on many occasions to provide feedback and answer the public's questions about his research.
